At Five Little Piggies Podiatry, we’re always on our toes—not just caring for your feet but stepping lightly on the planet too. Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword for us; it’s a commitment woven into every step we take, every glove we pull on, and every bit of paper we try not to print. Here’s how we’re making our podiatry practice greener, cleaner, and kinder to Mother Earth.

Powering Up with 100% Renewable Energy

By February 2027, we’re proud to announce that Five Little Piggies Podiatry will be powered entirely by renewable energy. That means no more fossil fuels lurking behind the scenes while we care for your feet. Switching to a 100% renewable energy provider isn’t just about reducing our carbon footprint—it’s about setting a shining example in the healthcare sector. We want our energy to be as pure as our intentions, fuelling your foot health with the power of wind, sun, and other clean sources.

Gloves That Don’t Cost the Earth

Nitrile gloves are an essential tool in podiatry - ours are now biodegradable!

We know gloves are essential in podiatry—after all, hygiene is non-negotiable. But single-use nitrile gloves? Not so much. Standard nitrile (synthetic rubber) gloves can take upwards of 100 years to decompose! That’s why we’ve switched to biodegradable nitrile gloves. These eco-friendly alternatives are manufactured using special additives, allowing the gloves to break down much faster in the environment - in a matter of months, rather than years. This way, we’re reducing pollution and landfill waste. It’s a small change that packs a big punch in protecting ecosystems, proving you can be clean and green at the same time.

Refills: Less Waste, More Sense

We’re big fans of refills here at Five Little Piggies. Our skin cleanser and hard surface disinfectant come in large recyclable containers, which we then dispense into smaller spray bottles for everyday use. This simple system cuts down on single-use plastic waste and reduces packaging overall. It’s a clever way to keep things hygienic and efficient without the environmental baggage of constant repurchasing of smaller bottles. A refill a day keeps the waste away!

Lighting the Way with LEDs

We’ve given our clinic a bright, energy-efficient makeover by switching to LED lighting in our waiting area and treatment rooms. During treatments, LED magnifier lamps help us see every detail clearly while using a fraction of the energy traditional bulbs consume. And we’re not stopping there—other lighting fixtures throughout the clinic are in the process of being upgraded to LEDs too. This means less energy use, lower electricity bills, and a smaller carbon footprint—all without dimming the quality of your care.

Driving Change: 70% of Home Visits with an EV

Over 70% of our journeys to in-home treatments are made by EV.

When it comes to house calls, we’re putting our money where our wheels are. Around 70% of our journeys to treat patients in their own homes are undertaken using electric vehicles (EVs). This isn’t just about cutting emissions—it’s about embracing the future of sustainable travel in healthcare. Quiet, clean, and efficient, our EVs help us reduce pollution and noise while delivering top-notch care right to your doorstep. It’s a win for your feet and for the planet.

Recycling: More Than Just a Bin Job

Around 70% of our regular waste is recycled.

Recycling isn’t a chore—it’s a responsibility. At Five Little Piggies, we’ve set up a rigorous recycling system to ensure as much waste as possible finds its way back into the cycle, rather than the landfill. Paper, plastics, packaging—you name it, we recycle it. Approximately 70% of our waste is currently recycled, and we’re always looking for ways to further improve this figure. While much clinical waste isn’t recyclable, we handle it carefully and separately from regular waste; complying with health regulations while minimising environmental impact. We’re also working with our clinical waste management partner to ensure that, where possible, non-recyclable clinical waste is diverted away from landfill and is instead processed for energy recovery. It’s all about closing the loop and giving materials a second chance to shine.

Printing Only When Absolutely Necessary

We get it—sometimes you just need to put pen to paper. But at Five Little Piggies, we’re trying hard to keep printing to a minimum. Digital records, online appointment reminders, and electronic communications are our new best friends. When printing is unavoidable, we use recycled paper and print double-sided to halve the paper consumption. It’s about balancing practicality with planet care, one sheet at a time.

Powered by Green AI and Search Engine

Even our digital footprint is under the microscope. We use Ecosia, the search engine that plants trees with its ad revenue, for all our online research and daily browsing. It’s a simple swap that helps reforest the planet, offset carbon emissions, and support biodiversity. Where we use AI, we use Ecosia’s AI - we believe that this is the most sustainable AI available as it uses smaller and faster AI models than other providers, thus consuming less energy. Ecosia itself generates more clean energy than it consumes for all searches and AI queries, providing excess energy back to the power grid. Ecosia also donates 100% of its profits to climate action (primarily tree planting). Because why not let your podiatrist’s AI be as green as their practice?

At Five Little Piggies Podiatry, we believe sustainability is a journey, not a destination. Every step we take towards greener practices is a step towards a healthier planet—and healthier feet. We’re proud to care for your soles while keeping the soil beneath our feet safe and sound. So, here’s to walking the walk, with a little tongue in cheek and a lot of heart in every step.

Stay tuned for more updates on our sustainability journey. After all, good podiatry is about balance—between care, comfort, and conscience. And we’re here to keep all three in perfect harmony.
